Nintendo Direct -- May 17, 2013

Today, Nintendo had another one of its Nintendo Direct Announcements at 10am ET, 7am PT and 2pm GMT.

Below is a video link (courtesy of YouTube's embedding feature) to the entire presentation.

Overall, I was not particularly impressed with it, because not much was divulged, but it's nice to know that Nintendo is partnering with SEGA on their mascot's franchise. Sonic has been sunk (in my opinion as well as that of many other gamers) ever since he made the transition from 2D platforming to 3D. Don't get me wrong, the first two Sonic Adventure games were great for their time, but some of the other titles for the Nintendo Gamecube and other consoles weren't all that spectacular, many of which were poorly coded disasters (Sonic the Hedgehog 2006), and others were simply frustrating. This pattern of failure has been known as the "Sonic Cycle".

Nonetheless, a new Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (er...game) will be coming soon. I'm not a fan of the series per se...I like the notion of Mario & Sonic partnering up for titles, but this series is mostly riddled with minigames that I'm not particularly fond of. It's nice to play with others, but I tend to avoid spending money on these.

I am glad however that Mr. Iwata has revealed more information regarding Pikmin 3 in that we now know the plot of the game as well as the three new character's names, Alph, Brittany and Charlie. The plot is that Planet Hocotate is in a food crisis, and these three crash land on the Pikmin planet (sounds like elements of the first two games combined...whereas the second title had players collecting random items to sell in order to pay of the debt of the company that Olimar and Louie worked for, with the premier title being that players were stranded on the Pikmin Planet trying to gather all the parts necessary to escape its orbit...). Apparently, each day some of your "juice" reserves will deplete. Thus, it's perhaps vital for players to gather as many fruits as possible each day. Fortunately, Mr. Iwata announced that players can go back and replay days in order to improve their collecting prowess.

Other than these two big announcements (as well as the price details regarding The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages & The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons), there wasn't much else that was truly noteworthy. I suspect that Nintendo is saving major reveals for this year's E3 press conference, but it has been noted that Nintendo will not have the traditional presentation that we as gamers and investors have become accustomed to.

I look forward to seeing what Nintendo will do to remedy its "dry season" as well as comparing them to the other companies, Sony & Microsoft. Hopefully, some rumors will be debunked as well.
